Virtuti Militari
The Polish Order of the Virtuti Militari is one of the oldest decorations for valor in the world, equivalant to the British Victoria Cross or the US Medal of Honor. King Stanislaw August Poniatowski established it in 1792 to recognize and reward outstanding military valor that was above and beyond the call of duty. On the 50th Anniversary of its service, ORP Błyskawica was honoured with the Gold Cross of the Virtuti Militari Medal for its exceptional service and bravery during World War II, particularly for defending the Isle of Wight town of Cowes and from a massive Luftwaffe air raid on its shipyards and its overall contributions to the Allied war effort. |
